One of the best ways to control your mind is through daily affirmations. You can use them to train the brain to think positive thoughts, to make wise choices, to confront problems head-on and to never lose sight of your goals.

  • Here are 10 daily affirmations you should consider using to keep your mind focused, as an actor:

    #1: “I am an actor”

There’s a special power that comes with this declaration. You should never say that you are an aspiring actor. You are an actor! Say it loud and proud. Own it and believe it. In doing so, you begin to think of your career as a central part of who you are, rather than as a hobby to pick up and put down when things gets difficult.

Most people in other professions don’t label themselves “aspiring”. Neither should you. This is your profession! It’s who you are!

#2: “I will never forget why I became an actor”

With all the ups and (mostly) downs of the industry, it’s easy to lose sight of why you wanted to become an actor in the first place. Once you lose touch with your original motive, you’ll find yourself disillusioned when you face difficulties.

  • #3: “I will never allow rejection to discourage me”

By far, the toughest aspect of this business is accepting the fact that you will be rejected over and over and over and over again. You must accept those rejections without allowing them to dim your confidence in yourself.

#4: “I will never allow family and friends to discourage me”

If you’re like most actors, the majority of your family and friends are not actors. They work in more traditional professions.

Most will encourage you to pursue your dreams. But some will cast doubts and negativity on your dreams. You must not let their discouraging remarks cause you to quit.

  • #5: “I will never compare my progress to that of another actor”

Acting is not a keeping-up-with-the-Joneses kind of profession. Just because another actor is hot for the moment and in high demand is not cause for you to wonder why your career isn’t more prosperous.

Never look at another actor’s success and become discouraged by your own lack of success.

#6: “I will never neglect my training”

You have to keep your acting muscles sharp. Always! It’s crucial to your long-term success because knowledge accumulates over time.

If you can’t afford an expensive acting class at the moment, read as many books on the subject of acting as you can.

  • #7: “I will always be kind to everyone I meet”

Every famous actor got to where they are today because one person – one special person – believed in them enough to give them a chance. You never know who that person will be for you.

So be kind to everyone you meet in this business, from casting directors to talent agents to make-up artists to your fellow actors and actresses. Every person you meet is a potential gateway to a life-changing opportunity.

#8: “I will always be grateful for every opportunity I receive”

In the immortal words of Sheryl Crow, “It’s not having what you want, it’s wanting what you’ve got.”

Have an attitude of gratitude. Small roles that don’t pay much can be just as rewarding as larger roles that fatten your wallet. And it’s the small roles that prepare you to take on the big ones.

  • #9: “I will never place fame and fortune above perfecting my craft”

If you’re doing this for the fame, you’re doing it wrong. Do it for the love of the craft. Set yourself on a mission to become the greatest actor who ever lived.

Let fame and fortune be a funny thing that happened along the way.

#10: “I will never stop having fun as an actor”

As the old saying goes, “When it stops being fun, it’s time to stop.” Don’t stop having fun. If it’s not fun, it’s time for a shake-up.

Inject some fun into your journey. Try some new training. Expand your circle of creative friends. Do something you never thought you’d ever do, like stand-up comedy or a one-woman show or writing a movie script.

Use these affirmations to shape the way your mind views your acting career and your approach to it.
