  • 10 Facts About Natalie Wood

Natalie Wood was one of Hollywood’s brightest stars, known for her talent, beauty, and tragic death. From her early days as a child actress to her iconic roles in Rebel Without a Cause and West Side Story, she left a lasting legacy in the entertainment industry. Here are 10 fascinating facts about Natalie Wood that highlight her remarkable life and career.

    1. Her Real Name Was Natalia Nikolaevna Zakharenko

Natalie Wood was born Natalia Nikolaevna Zakharenko on July 20, 1938, in San Francisco, California. Her parents were Russian immigrants, and she grew up speaking both English and Russian at home.

When she entered Hollywood as a child star, studio executives believed her name was too difficult to pronounce and market. They changed it to “Natalie Wood,” inspired by director Sam Wood. Despite adopting her new name, Natalie remained proud of her Russian heritage throughout her life.

    2. She Started Acting at the Age of Four

Natalie’s acting career began early, thanks to her ambitious mother, Maria. At just four years old, she was spotted by a director while watching a film being made in Santa Rosa, California.

Her first official film appearance was an uncredited role in Happy Land (1943) when she was five years old. Although she only had a brief scene, her talent caught the attention of Hollywood insiders, leading to more roles.

By the age of seven, Natalie landed her first major role in Tomorrow Is Forever (1946), starring alongside Orson Welles and Claudette Colbert. This was just the beginning of a legendary career.

    3. Her Breakout Role Was in Miracle on 34th Street

At eight years old, Natalie won over audiences as Susan Walker in the Christmas classic Miracle on 34th Street (1947). She played a skeptical little girl who eventually believes in Santa Claus, thanks to the kindness of Kris Kringle.

The film became an instant hit and is still beloved today. It also cemented Natalie’s place as one of Hollywood’s top child stars. Reflecting on her early fame, she later said:

“I grew up in front of the camera, and sometimes I forgot how to just be a kid.”

    4. She Starred Opposite James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause

In 1955, Natalie Wood made the difficult transition from child actress to serious Hollywood star when she was cast as Judy in Rebel Without a Cause. She starred opposite James Dean and Sal Mineo in the groundbreaking teen drama.

Her performance earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, making her one of the youngest nominees at the time. The film became a cultural phenomenon and is still regarded as one of the greatest movies ever made.

Natalie formed a strong connection with James Dean, later describing him as “a tortured soul but a brilliant actor.”

    5. She Was Afraid of Water

One of the most tragic aspects of Natalie’s story is that she had a lifelong fear of deep water. As a child, her mother told her that she would die in dark water, and this fear stayed with her throughout her life.

Despite this, she often had to film scenes involving water, including a famous one in Splendor in the Grass (1961), where she had to jump into a lake. She later admitted that she was terrified during the scene but pushed through because she was dedicated to her craft.

Her fear of water made her mysterious drowning in 1981 all the more chilling, as she reportedly avoided being near water whenever possible.

    6. She Dated Several Hollywood Stars

Throughout her life, Natalie was linked to many high-profile men in Hollywood. She was known for her beauty and charm, and many leading actors were drawn to her.

Some of the famous men she dated included:

    • James Dean (rumored)
    • Elvis Presley
    • Warren Beatty
    • Frank Sinatra
    • Dennis Hopper

However, her most famous love story was with Robert Wagner, whom she married twice—first in 1957 and again in 1972 after a divorce and brief marriage to producer Richard Gregson.

    7. She Was Nominated for Three Academy Awards

Despite her massive success, Natalie never won an Academy Award. However, she was nominated three times for her incredible performances:

    • Best Supporting ActressRebel Without a Cause (1955)
    • Best ActressSplendor in the Grass (1961)
    • Best ActressLove with the Proper Stranger (1963)

Her emotional depth and talent were undeniable, and she remains one of Hollywood’s greatest actresses never to have won an Oscar.

    8. She Starred in West Side Story, But Didn’t Sing

One of Natalie Wood’s most famous roles was Maria in West Side Story (1961), the beloved musical about star-crossed lovers. The film won 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

However, while Natalie delivered a stunning performance, her singing voice was dubbed by Marni Nixon, a professional singer who also provided vocals for Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady and Deborah Kerr in The King and I.

Natalie had recorded her own vocals but was later told they wouldn’t be used. She was disappointed, later saying:

“I wanted it to be my voice, but that’s Hollywood.”

    9. Her Death Remains a Mystery

On November 29, 1981, Natalie drowned near Catalina Island while on a yacht with her husband, Robert Wagner, and actor Christopher Walken. She was 43 years old.

The circumstances of her death remain unclear. Initially ruled an accidental drowning, the case was reopened in 2011 after new witness testimonies emerged. In 2018, Wagner was named a “person of interest”, but no charges were ever filed.

Her sister, Lana Wood, has long believed foul play was involved, stating:

“Natalie would never have gone near the edge of that boat alone. She was too afraid of water.”

To this day, her death remains one of Hollywood’s greatest unsolved mysteries.

    10. Her Legacy Lives On

Even though she passed away over 40 years ago, Natalie Wood’s impact on Hollywood remains strong. She has been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and her films continue to be loved by new generations.

Her daughter, Natasha Gregson Wagner, has worked hard to keep her mother’s legacy alive, releasing a documentary titled Natalie Wood: What Remains Behind (2020), which offers a personal look at her life and career.

As director Elia Kazan once said:

“Natalie Wood had a special magic. When she was on screen, you couldn’t look away.”

    Final Thoughts

Natalie Wood’s life was filled with incredible achievements, heartbreak, and mystery. From child stardom to Hollywood icon, she captivated audiences with her talent and beauty. While her untimely death still raises questions, her legacy as one of Hollywood’s greatest actresses is undeniable.

Her films, from Miracle on 34th Street to West Side Story, continue to be beloved, ensuring that Natalie Wood will never be forgotten.
