He was born Mahershalalhashbaz Gilmore on February 16, 1974, in Oakland, California, United States. He later adopted the shorter name Mahershala Ali professionally.

    Ali initially gained attention for his role as Richard Tyler in the television series “The 4400” (2004-2007). However, he achieved greater prominence with his portrayal of Juan in the critically acclaimed film “Moonlight” (2016), directed by Barry Jenkins. His performance earned him widespread acclaim and several awards, including the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, making him the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar.
