Norma Jeane Mortensen (June 1, 1926 – August 5, 1962), better known as Marilyn Monroe, was one of the most famous and infamous actresses of her generation. Her success as an actress (she won a Golden Globe for Best Actress for her role in Some Like It Hot, 1959), combined with her commercial success (her films grossed over $200 million dollars) and her status as the sex symbol of her generation (which included nude modeling and her sex-laced, happy birthday song to President Kennedy) made her an on-screen legend.
Monroe cultivated, but eventually regretted her persona as the “dumb blond”, which she earned with roles in films like Gentlemen Prefer Blonds and How to Marry a Millionaire. However, Monroe also took on more serious roles in films like The Seven Year Itch, Clash by Night and Don’t Bother to Knock.
Monroe was 36 years old when she passed. She was found dead in her home in Los Angeles, due to an overdose of barbiturates.
