  • How Ian McKellen Got Into Acting

Ian McKellen, one of the most renowned actors of his generation, is a name that resonates with both theater and film audiences worldwide. His versatile performances, from the wise wizard Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings to the complex Magneto in the X-Men series, have made him a household name. But how did McKellen begin his journey into acting?

    Early Life and Influences

Born on May 25, 1939, in Burnley, Lancashire, Ian McKellen’s first encounter with the stage occurred in his childhood. He was introduced to the world of acting at the age of 9 when he saw his first play. McKellen’s love for theater grew when he saw a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which left a profound impact on him.

“My first experience with the theater was magical,” McKellen recalls. “It was a world where anything seemed possible, and it filled me with a sense of wonder.”

    Education and Training

McKellen’s passion for acting led him to study at the University of Cambridge, where he attended the prestigious St. Catharine’s College. During his time at Cambridge, he joined the university’s dramatic society and began performing in various productions. He then trained at the Belvoir Street Theatre, honing his craft and learning the ropes of stage performance.

“I knew early on that acting was what I wanted to do, even if I didn’t know exactly how to go about it,” McKellen explains. “It was a combination of the love of storytelling and the thrill of performance that drew me in.”

    Breaking Into the Professional Stage

After completing his education, McKellen moved to London, where he began auditioning for professional stage roles. His first major break came in 1965 when he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company, which helped him solidify his reputation as a talented and serious actor. During this time, McKellen performed in many iconic Shakespearean plays, such as Macbeth, King Lear, and Richard III, roles that would become staples of his career.

Looking back on his early years, McKellen remembers the feeling of performing in Shakespeare’s works: “The language was like music to me. I was captivated by the way Shakespeare’s words could capture the depths of human experience.”

Transition to Film and International Fame

While McKellen’s career initially revolved around the theater, he soon began to branch out into film and television. His breakthrough into mainstream cinema came in 1995 when he starred in Richard III, a film adaptation of the Shakespeare play. His portrayal of the ruthless, manipulative king received critical acclaim and opened doors to Hollywood.

It wasn’t until his role as Magneto in X-Men (2000) that McKellen became a global superstar. Playing the antagonist of the superhero film franchise introduced him to a new audience and solidified his reputation as one of the finest actors in both theater and cinema.

In a 2001 interview, McKellen reflected on his shift from the stage to the screen: “The transition from theater to film was never difficult for me. Acting is acting, and whether you’re performing on stage or in front of a camera, it’s about bringing truth to the character.”

A Legacy of Advocacy and Mentorship

Along with his acting career, McKellen has also been a strong advocate for LGBT rights. As an openly gay man, he has used his platform to fight for equality and create awareness about issues affecting the LGBTQ+ community. McKellen’s openness about his sexuality has been a source of inspiration for many, particularly those in the theater world.

“I think it’s important for people to see that you can be a successful actor and still live your truth,” McKellen says. “The world is a much richer place when we can accept and celebrate our differences.”
