  • How Sterling K. Brown Got Into Acting

Sterling K. Brown, known for his powerful performances in This Is Us, Black Panther, and The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, has emerged as one of the most celebrated actors of his time. With two Primetime Emmy Awards and a Screen Actors Guild Award under his belt, Brown’s path to acting is a story of determination, self-discovery, and a deep passion for storytelling.

    A Childhood of Inspiration

Sterling Kelby Brown was born on April 5, 1976, in St. Louis, Missouri, the middle of five children. Raised by his mother after his father passed away when he was ten, Brown’s early years were shaped by a strong work ethic and a supportive family.

“I was a sensitive kid,” Brown shared in an interview. “I felt things deeply, and storytelling became a way to process the world around me.”

Brown first encountered acting in high school, where he participated in plays at Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School. “I wasn’t the most outgoing person, but on stage, I felt like I could express myself fully,” he said. “It was a revelation.”

    Discovering a Calling in College

Brown initially enrolled at Stanford University intending to major in economics. However, his plans shifted when he took a drama class during his freshman year. “That class changed everything for me,” he recalled. “I realized that acting wasn’t just something I enjoyed—it was something I needed to do.”

Encouraged by his professors and peers, Brown changed his major to drama. Reflecting on that decision, he said, “Choosing drama felt like taking a leap of faith, but it also felt right. I wanted to pursue something that set my soul on fire.”

    Training for the Craft

After graduating from Stanford, Brown continued his education at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where he earned his MFA in acting. “Tisch was where I really learned the discipline of acting,” he said. “It wasn’t just about talent—it was about showing up, doing the work, and honing your craft every day.”

Brown credits his time at Tisch with helping him understand the depth and complexity of acting. “It was there that I learned how to fully inhabit a character and bring their story to life,” he explained.

    Breaking into the Industry

Brown’s journey in Hollywood began with smaller roles in television shows like ER, NYPD Blue, and Supernatural. Though the road wasn’t easy, he remained committed to his dream. “I faced my fair share of rejection,” he said. “But I kept reminding myself why I started. I knew this was what I was meant to do.”

His breakout role came in 2016 when he portrayed prosecutor Christopher Darden in The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. The performance earned him his first Emmy Award and put him on the map as a talent to watch.

“That role was a game-changer for me,” Brown said. “It was an opportunity to tell a story that mattered, and it reaffirmed my belief in the power of acting.”

Finding Global Fame with This Is Us

Later in 2016, Brown was cast as Randall Pearson in the hit drama series This Is Us. His portrayal of a loving father and son grappling with identity and family dynamics earned him widespread acclaim and another Emmy Award.

“Randall is such a beautifully written character,” Brown shared. “He’s complex, vulnerable, and relatable. Playing him has been one of the greatest joys of my career.”

Brown’s work on This Is Us has resonated deeply with audiences, with many praising his ability to bring authenticity and emotional depth to the role.

    Advice for Aspiring Actors

For those looking to break into the industry, Brown emphasizes the importance of resilience and preparation. “This is a tough business, but if you love it, don’t give up,” he advised. “Study your craft, surround yourself with supportive people, and be ready to work hard.”

He also encourages young actors to embrace their uniqueness. “What makes you different is what makes you special,” he said. “Lean into that, and don’t be afraid to take risks.”

    A Legacy of Excellence

From his early days on stage to his celebrated roles on screen, Sterling K. Brown’s journey into acting is a testament to his talent, hard work, and unwavering passion. As he continues to inspire audiences with his performances, Brown remains committed to using his platform to tell meaningful stories.

“Acting has given me so much,” he said. “It’s allowed me to connect with people, explore humanity, and make a difference. I feel incredibly blessed to do what I love every day.”
