Kissing scenes are a common part of acting, but they can also be one of the most awkward aspects of the job. For actors, it’s not just about delivering a believable on-screen kiss; it’s about making sure their co-star is comfortable, too. A common question from fans is: Do actors brush their teeth before kissing scenes? The short answer is: yes, usually—but there’s more to the story.

  • Why Oral Hygiene Matters for Kissing Scenes

A kissing scene is an intimate moment, even when performed in front of cameras, directors, and crew. Proper oral hygiene is essential for ensuring that both actors feel at ease.

    1. Respect for the Co-Star:
No one wants to get up close and personal with bad breath. Actors often make an extra effort to brush their teeth, rinse with mouthwash, or chew breath mints before these scenes.
    2. Professionalism:
Being considerate of a co-star’s comfort is part of maintaining a professional working environment. Clean teeth and fresh breath show respect for the job and the people involved.
    3. Close-Up Cameras:
Kissing scenes often include close-up shots, where every detail is visible. Clean teeth help maintain the illusion of romance and prevent distractions for the audience.

  • What Happens Behind the Scenes?

    1. Teeth Brushing Rituals:
Many actors have a routine before filming a kissing scene. Brushing their teeth is usually step one. Some even keep travel-sized toothbrushes and toothpaste in their on-set trailers.
    2. Breath Fresheners:
In addition to brushing, actors often use breath mints, gum, or mouthwash right before a scene. Breath sprays are also a popular option because they’re quick and effective.
    3. Avoiding Certain Foods:
Before shooting, actors typically avoid foods that cause bad breath, like garlic, onions, or overly spicy meals. Many productions even provide “safe” snacks on set, such as apples or plain crackers, to ensure everyone is kiss-ready.

  • Communication Is Key

Believe it or not, some actors discuss their preferences or routines with their co-stars before shooting a kissing scene. This can include:

    • Agreeing on hygiene practices: Both parties might agree to brush their teeth or use mouthwash beforehand.
    • Establishing boundaries: Some actors feel more comfortable with closed-mouth kisses or specific choreography to keep things professional.

    Exceptions to the Rule

While most actors prioritize oral hygiene, there are exceptions, particularly in scenes where the characters aren’t supposed to look polished. For example:

    • Messy Romantic Comedies: A spontaneous kiss after eating or drinking might mean foregoing the perfect hygiene routine to keep the scene realistic.
    • Dramatic Contexts: If the character is disheveled or distressed, the kiss may reflect that, and extra grooming may not align with the story.

  • Challenges of Kissing Scenes

    1. Multiple Takes:
Kissing scenes often require multiple takes, which can make it difficult for actors to keep their breath fresh throughout the shoot. This is where breath mints and sprays come in handy.
    2. Dietary Restrictions or Allergies:
If one actor has an allergy to certain breath mints, gums, or even toothpaste ingredients, they may need to use alternative methods.
    3. Awkwardness:
No matter how much prep goes into it, kissing someone on camera in front of a full crew can feel unnatural. Good oral hygiene helps minimize discomfort but doesn’t completely eliminate the awkwardness.

    Famous Actors’ Experiences

    • Jennifer Lawrence: Known for her sense of humor, Lawrence has joked about eating garlic or tuna before kissing scenes to tease her co-stars. Of course, this is rare and typically done in jest.
    • Miley Cyrus: Cyrus once admitted she was meticulous about brushing her teeth before intimate scenes to ensure her co-stars felt comfortable.
    • Will Smith: In an interview, Smith revealed that he always carries breath mints on set and uses them before any scene involving close contact.
