You may not think that social media is all that important to your acting career. After all, actors in the past never really needed it to be successful. So, you think, all you need is a good headshot and showreel and you’re good to go, right?

  • Well, yes and no. Yes, you don’t necessarily need social media in order to be successful. And, no, what actors needed in the past is not the same as what they need today.

The game has changed. And social media is a big part of the new landscape for actors. Social media can be a great addition to your overall strategy for success.

    #1: Build your fan base

You’re a star! Ok, maybe not yet. But you should still believe that you are! And what celebrity doesn’t have a social media presence?

Use social media to build a small army of loyal fans. Share your latest news, headshots and film clips with them. Years from now, your fan base can help propel your career forward!

  • #2: Connect with other actors

The easiest way to keep in touch with other actors you meet is via social media. It requires no text messages, no phone calls, no small talk.

You just follow them and let them follow you. Down the road, they can contact you through social media to tell you about that exciting new project that they want you to be part of.

    #3: Connect with industry pros

Did you know that some casting directors, talent agents and talent managers are on social media? Many of them post regularly. Some post random musings about their lives while others dispense career advice and helpful tips.

Social media is a great, low-key way to connect with these industry professionals. It’s a chance to get yourself seen without being pushy about it.

  • #4: Use social media to get cast

Did you know that you could get cast by having a large social media following? Consider: you’re up for the lead role in a low-budget feature. You’ve got one million fans on Instagram. Your competition has only a handful. Who gets cast?

The producer is obviously going to want to leverage your million-person fan base to help promote the film!

#5: Use social media to cast yourself

One day, you might get tired of waiting for the phone to ring. You might decide to write a short film or to produce your own web series. Wouldn’t it be nice to already have a following? Wouldn’t it be helpful to already have, say, 100,000 YouTube followers?

It’s the 2020’s out there! Get with the times. Get your acting career on social media!
