Looking at Gas Prices Makes Me Thankful for Self-Tapes
It’s pretty great to not have to drive to an audition right now!

Gas prices in Southern California are insane! In some places, it’s as high as $10 per gallon.
As much as I used to run around this city, shuffling from one audition to the next, I can only imagine the personal hell I’d be experiencing right now, were it not for self-tapes. I would be dreading every single audition that came my way, knowing how much the price of gasoline would eat into my budget.
I used to have two or three auditions per week, sometimes two on the same day, before the pandemic. They were mostly commercial auditions. Almost all were in-person auditions.

A typical week would go something like this:
Monday:
Commercial audition in Santa Monica at Ocean Park Casting
Wednesday:
Audition at the Space Station Studios off Cahuenga in LA
Thursday:
Commercial audition in Glendale at the On Your Mark Studios in Sherman Oaks
Friday:
Callback from Monday’s audition at Ocean Park
By the end of the week, I would have logged nearly 200 miles of driving for auditions and callbacks alone! And I’d usually have nothing to show for it, except an occasional avail.
It’s pretty awesome to be able to self-tape and not have to drive to a location to audition for something!
It would be even more painful to go through this audition process with gas prices now out of control! So, yeah, I gotta say, it’s pretty awesome to be able to self-tape and not have to drive to a location to audition for something!
And don’t even get me started on parking in LA!
