While Mortensen has never been the kind of actor who courts awards, the industry has taken notice. He received Academy Award nominations for Eastern Promises, Captain Fantastic, and Green Book—a film that also brought him widespread recognition among general audiences.

Film critic Peter Travers described him as “an actor’s actor, one who disappears so completely into his roles that you forget you’re watching Viggo Mortensen.”

Despite this praise, Mortensen has never won an Oscar. Some see this as a glaring oversight. But Mortensen himself is unfazed. “I don’t act for awards,” he told The Guardian. “The work itself is the reward.”

His perspective is refreshing in a Hollywood often obsessed with validation. It reinforces the idea that his craft is about connection and truth, not glamour or accolades.

A true Renaissance man, Mortensen is also a published poet, painter, and photographer. This multidisciplinary background bleeds into his acting style. He approaches every role with a kind of creative reverence, as if he’s not just playing a part, but interpreting a piece of art.

On the set of The Lord of the Rings, he famously carried his sword off-camera, spoke in Elvish, and performed many of his own stunts—all in the name of authenticity. He even slept in the woods before filming certain scenes to better understand his character’s mindset.

David Cronenberg, who directed him in several films, called him “a dream actor for a director. He comes prepared, with a million ideas, and never lets ego get in the way of performance.”

That dedication also shows up in his smaller projects. In Falling, Mortensen not only starred in but wrote, directed, and composed the score for the film—a deeply personal story inspired by his family. It’s a raw, honest look at a difficult father-son relationship, and a clear example of Mortensen’s evolving voice as an artist.

Mortensen does not shy away from morally complex characters. In Green Book, he played Tony “Lip” Vallelonga, a rough-edged Italian-American hired to drive a Black pianist through the Jim Crow South. The role drew both acclaim and controversy, particularly around the film’s handling of racial dynamics.

While the film itself sparked debate, Mortensen’s performance was universally praised. He brought humor, warmth, and transformation to a character that could have easily become a stereotype.

“In lesser hands, this role could’ve felt phony,” said critic A.O. Scott. “But Mortensen brings real soul to the part.”

This ability to humanize flawed characters is one of Mortensen’s strengths. Whether playing a violent mobster, a doomsday father, or an ex-Nazi in Good, he brings empathy and complexity to every role.

One of the reasons Mortensen isn’t a household name despite his résumé is that he actively avoids the spotlight. He doesn’t live in Los Angeles, rarely does press junkets, and is more likely to be found publishing a book of photography than attending a red-carpet event.

Born in New York but raised in Argentina and Venezuela, Mortensen is fluent in several languages, including Spanish and Danish. This international upbringing shaped his worldview and artistic sensibilities.

“I’ve never really seen myself as belonging to just one place,” he told Interview Magazine. “And I think that helps me understand characters who are outsiders.”

This outsider identity is perhaps why he resonates so strongly with characters who live on society’s fringes. He plays them not as oddities, but as real, complex individuals navigating their own truths.

Respect for Mortensen isn’t limited to critics—it’s also echoed by his peers. Liv Tyler, his co-star in The Lord of the Rings, once said, “He’s the most dedicated, passionate actor I’ve ever worked with. He puts his heart into everything.”

Mahershala Ali, who starred alongside Mortensen in Green Book, praised his generosity on set: “He gave me so much space to do my thing. Viggo’s ego never got in the way. He wanted to build the film together.”

Director Peter Jackson recalled how Mortensen joined The Lord of the Rings just days before filming started. “He didn’t hesitate. He was all in from the moment he showed up. We got lucky.”

These testimonies paint a picture of an actor who values collaboration, preparation, and heart—qualities that aren’t always visible on the screen but are essential to great performances.

The answer is a resounding yes. Viggo Mortensen may not seek the spotlight, but his work speaks volumes. He’s an actor who disappears into roles, who respects the craft, who takes risks, and who always puts story before self.
