  • How Riz Ahmed Got Into Acting

Riz Ahmed, the boundary-pushing actor and musician, has captivated audiences with his performances in Sound of Metal, The Night Of, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. His journey to stardom is as unique as his career choices, marked by resilience, a fearless attitude, and a passion for telling authentic stories.

    Early Life in London

Born in Wembley, London, to a British-Pakistani family, Rizwan Ahmed’s upbringing was steeped in cultural richness. Despite facing societal challenges, Ahmed developed a love for storytelling early on. “Growing up, I saw how stories could shape the way people saw each other,” he said in an interview. “It made me want to tell stories that mattered.”

Although Ahmed was academically gifted, attending Oxford University to study Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, he felt the pull toward creative expression. “I always had this creative itch I couldn’t ignore,” he explained. “Even while I was at Oxford, I was sneaking off to do plays and open mics.”

    Discovering Acting

Ahmed’s initial foray into acting began with school plays and local theater groups. “The first time I stepped on stage, it felt like I was finding a new way to communicate,” he said. “It was liberating, like I could be anyone and explore different perspectives.”

While pursuing his degree, Ahmed also began to make a name for himself in London’s underground music scene as a rapper under the moniker Riz MC. But acting remained a constant passion.

    Formal Training and Early Struggles

After finishing his studies, Ahmed attended the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London. This training refined his natural talent and gave him the technical tools to navigate the competitive world of acting. “Drama school was tough,” he shared. “I was learning how to embrace vulnerability while also trying to prove that I belonged in a space that wasn’t always welcoming to people who looked like me.”

Ahmed faced numerous challenges breaking into the industry, often being typecast in stereotypical roles. “In the early days, I got called in for a lot of ‘terrorist number three’ auditions,” he said with a wry smile. “It was frustrating, but I decided to use it as fuel to push for roles that reflected a fuller spectrum of human experience.”

    Breakthrough Roles

Ahmed’s big break came with the independent film Four Lions (2010), a satirical comedy about a group of inept terrorists. “Four Lions was a game-changer,” he said. “It was the first time I felt like I could bring nuance and depth to a role that might otherwise be one-dimensional.”

From there, Ahmed continued to carve out a path with critically acclaimed roles, including in The Reluctant Fundamentalist and Nightcrawler. But his role in the HBO series The Night Of (2016) was a turning point, earning him an Emmy Award for his portrayal of a young man entangled in the criminal justice system. “That role allowed me to explore issues of identity, belonging, and systemic inequality,” he reflected.

    The Sound of Success

Ahmed reached new heights with Sound of Metal (2020), where he played a drummer grappling with hearing loss. The role earned him an Academy Award nomination, making him the first Muslim to be nominated for Best Actor. Reflecting on the milestone, Ahmed said, “It’s not about breaking barriers for the sake of it. It’s about opening doors so that more stories get told.”

A Mission to Tell Authentic Stories

Ahmed is also known for his activism and dedication to creating space for underrepresented voices in film and media. “I’ve always believed that storytelling is a powerful way to challenge stereotypes and foster understanding,” he said.

Through projects like his production company, Left Handed Films, Ahmed is committed to amplifying diverse narratives. “We’re all multifaceted,” he said. “Our stories should reflect that complexity.”

    Advice for Aspiring Actors

For those looking to follow in his footsteps, Ahmed offers simple yet profound advice: “Stay true to yourself. The industry might try to put you in a box, but your uniqueness is your superpower. Keep pushing, even when it feels like no one’s listening.”

    Legacy in the Making

Riz Ahmed’s journey from a young creative in London to an internationally celebrated actor is a testament to the power of perseverance and authenticity. By staying true to his roots and pushing boundaries, Ahmed has not only found his voice but also paved the way for others to do the same.
